Where to fly in August for a beach holiday
Greece: peak season and the Mediterranean at its warmest
Greece is the most sought-after destination out of Prague in August, and deservedly so. Air temperatures climb to 35 °C and the sea sits at around 26 °C. The islands are fully open and hotels are often packed, but in return August brings the widest choice of them in the whole year.
Kos has fine sandy beaches and a lively resort scene, Corfu is greener and calmer, and Kefalonia draws people in with crystal-clear water and romance without the crowds. Egypt: the warmest water and diving to match
Egypt in August? For anyone who loves diving and snorkelling it is a dream. The Red Sea reaches up to 30 °C in August and visibility underwater is excellent. In Hurghada or Marsa Alam the air heats up to 40 °C, so the day tends to revolve around the early morning, the early evening and the pool.

Spain and the Canary Islands

Where to fly in August for a holiday closer to home
Italy - sea, lakes and cuisine
Italy stands out for the sheer breadth of what it offers. The Adriatic coast (Rimini, Cesenatico, Caorle) is family-friendly and affordable. Calabria in the south has clean water reaching 28 °C and far fewer crowds. Sardinia is the more upmarket address, with crystal-clear water.

Where to go in August for something exotic
Zanzibar
August falls in the dry, sunny season on the Tanzanian island of Zanzibar, which makes it ideal timing for a visit. The air sits at around 28 °C and the sea at 27 °C. The tides are far more pronounced than in Europe and at low tide the water retreats to leave muddy shallows, so check the conditions on your chosen beach beforehand. The flight from Prague takes roughly 9 hours with one connection.
Maldives
In the Maldives, August comes at the tail end of the wetter season. Showers are possible, but they are usually short and will not ruin your holiday. Both air and sea temperatures hover around 30 °C. Where to go on holiday in August with children?
With the summer holidays in full swing, August is the obvious time for a family break. A few things worth bearing in mind:
- Islands where the beach shelves gently into the sea suit small children far better than a rocky coastline. Kos, Rhodes, Tenerife and Fuerteventura all have sandy beaches with shallow water, and most hotels have a children's pool.
