How to check in your stroller for the flight

You're entitled to bring a stroller for your child free of charge, regardless of their age. This applies even to children over two — with most airlines even up to age 12. Transport in the hold requires no advance booking and no payment.

There are two ways to check in a stroller.

• Checking it in with your regular baggage means handing the stroller over at the check-in counter along with your suitcase. Staff will weigh it, tag it, and send you to the oversized baggage desk, where its contents get a quick check. The advantage: you move through the airport unencumbered, pass security more easily, and keep your hands free. • Gate check-in lets you use the stroller throughout the airport right up to boarding. At the gate, you fold it and hand it to a staff member, who stows it in the hold. After landing, it may be waiting for you at the aircraft door, or you'll find it on the belt with the rest of the luggage or at the oversized baggage desk.

Think ahead about which option works better for you. If you're traveling alone with your child, packing up the stroller at the gate in the final minutes before boarding can be stressful. If there are two of you, gate check-in makes good sense.

What to wrap your stroller in for air travel

An unwrapped stroller travels in the hold with no protection at all. Other luggage can scratch it, crush it, or snap its moving parts. On top of that, some airlines (Smartwings, for example) refuse damage claims for items that weren't properly packed.

The simplest and cheapest option is a large garbage bag or an IKEA bag. It covers the stroller, keeps dirt off, and it's no loss if the bag itself gets torn. It offers zero cushioning, though.

Better protection comes from the manufacturer's original travel bag or a universal padded case. A quality one costs roughly 500 to 1,500 CZK — Thule, for example, makes a padded bag designed for its own strollers. The benefits: protection during handling, plus you can tuck clothes or blankets inside and free up suitcase space.

Whatever you pack it in, be sure to take photos or a short video of the stroller from all sides before handing it over. If damage occurs, that's your strongest evidence. Report any damage immediately after landing at the Baggage Service Office desk in the arrivals hall — don't wait until you get home.

Taking a stroller on a plane – rules and conditions

A stroller counts as baby equipment, which airlines carry on top of your regular baggage allowance. Every child is entitled to two pieces of baby equipment free of charge — most often a stroller plus a car seat or a travel cot. Age limits vary by airline. Ryanair and easyJet carry strollers for children up to age 12, Wizz Air even up to 14. Always verify the exact conditions on your airline's website.

Ryanair applies a 15 kg weight limit to baby equipment. In practice, slight overages are usually tolerated without a problem.

Watch out for the add-on offered during ticket purchase. Ryanair sells stroller transport as an extra for around 15 EUR. You don't need to pay it — transporting a stroller in the hold is free as standard. The fee only applies if you want to take the stroller into the cabin as your cabin bag instead of a standard carry-on suitcase.

Do you pay for a stroller on the plane?

Standard stroller transport in the hold is free. There's no fee and nothing to book in advance — just show up at the check-in counter or the gate and hand it over.

You only pay in two situations. If you buy the optional add-on when purchasing your ticket (it's not required, and many consider Ryanair's version a confusing practice). • Drawbacks: a more expensive ticket (you need Priority or a higher fare), strollers that fit the limits tend to be lighter with limited off-road ability, and there's less overhead bin space left for everyone else.

What to expect at the airport with a stroller

Václav Havel Airport lends out simple metal strollers designed for children who can sit up. They're located past security. They're not suitable for infants who can't sit upright, as the backrest is fixed and doesn't recline.

An alternative is a baby carrier or wrap, which doesn't count as an extra bag. For getting around the airport it's the most comfortable option — your child stays settled and your hands are free. Sometimes you can even pass through security without taking it off (it depends on the airport and staff).

On a connection, you pick up your stroller either at the aircraft door or at the oversized baggage claim at the transit airport. If you want the stroller with you when moving between terminals, tell the check-in staff so they can tag it accordingly.

Inspect your stroller as soon as you land. If you spot damage, report it while still in the arrivals hall at the baggage claims desk (Baggage Service Office). Once you leave the hall, you lose the option of an immediate claim. Airlines don't normally compensate minor scuffs and dirt; they do compensate serious damage — but only if you documented its condition before handover.
